Tickets are on sale for a music festival that has the potential to draw thousands of fans to Leoni Township in July.

The Land of NOD Experiment in Leoni Township will not be nearly as big as those concert extravaganzas — 8,000 weekend passes are available, compared to the more than 200,000 people who pack Chicago’s Grant Park — but organizers say the more intimate venue is another selling point.

The bands on the schedule may be unfamiliar to residents who don’t read Pitchfork or other publications devoted to musical niches, but several have national fanbases.

“They’re not necessarily giant radio bands, but they all have good, core followings,” Dan Sheridan said. “Fans that need to see them this summer will come from far and wide.”

Sheridan and college friend Paul Soltysiak have been talking for more than a decade about organizing a festival on Soltysiak’s property on Dalton Road. The Leoni Township Board issued them a conditional-use permit for 2009, but they decided they didn’t have enough time to pull off a big event last summer.

The cancellation of this year’s Rothbury Festival means that people looking for a weekend of camping and music in Michigan may turn to The Land of NOD as an alternative.

“We’re hoping to get quite a few fans (who are) disappointed they’re not around,” said Sheridan, who previously has presented music at festivals in New Orleans and Detroit through his multimedia production company, NooMoon.

Sheridan said he expects to announce more headlining acts in the coming weeks. The initial schedule also features such prominent members of Detroit’s rock scene as The Macpodz and The Satin Peaches.

The festival grounds will have areas devoted to visual, theatrical and other experimental arts.

For now, full weekend passes will be the only tickets available for the event, and attendance will be limited to ages 18 and older.

Organizers have pledged to donate a portion of each ticket sold to organizations such as the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Leoni Township Public Safety and Armory Arts Village.

Sheridan said most of the talent booking is done, but anyone interested in getting involved with the festival may contact organizers at landofnodexperiment@gmail.com.
